The Steuart Tray Bonspiel was founded in 1949 in honor of Steuart Tray, Sr., a Wauwatosa, Wisconsin., curler who passed away in 1948 at the young age of 44. His friends at the Wauwatosa Curling Club decided to sponsor an event in his honor and asked the Milwaukee and Chicago Curling Clubs to join in the bonspiel to recall the days and times when Wauwatosa had the only artificial ice facility in the Midwest (circa 1940). At that time, the Chicago and Milwaukee Curling Clubs had natural ice rinks, and they had to finish their events when the weather and temperature decided that it was time to do so. This one-day, tri-club event helps curlers recall these days of great camaraderie.
The event rotates among the three clubs. Participants can sign up as complete or partial teams or as individuals. The club winning the most games is declared the winner and keeps the trophy until the next bonspiel.
